About

Corporate Entity is an experimental work in which clippings are taken from plants belonging to corporations, (or other capitalist entities, such as real estate firms) and then transplanted and grown within my own living space. A clipping is simply a small part of a larger plant which is cut off to be planted elsewhere. The clipping develops new roots, becoming a self-sustaining organism. Clippings are not only genetically identical to the plants they are taken from but, because they do not cease to be alive during the transplantation process, are in fact THE SAME PLANT, now with bodies in two or more distinct locations. This mirrors the growth of capitalist organizations, (which spread iteratively in the form of new buildings/branches/workers) transforming the plant into a literal corporate entity.

This work is intended to explore that corporate structure within Global Capitalism through an organism which physically embodies it, as well as the translation of that structure/organism into the context of a personal and/or artistic space. It is also an early experiment in Clipping as a form of resistance/repurposing, along the same lines as Hacking. I refer to the entire work as experimental because I do not yet know what the outcomes, conceptually or physically, are going to be. Whether the clippings will even survive the process is not certain. What will be suggested if they don't, or how they will conceptually operate in the context of my practice if they do, is something that I cannot know until I've been able to develop and (literally) live with the work over time.

For this reason I have chosen not to present the work in a finished state, but rather as exactly what it is, an artistic experiment, as much research as artwork. The development of the piece will be documented over time using a dedicated Instagram account, (found here) with each image linked to a short article in which I describe the process and my thoughts on the work as it develops. This unconventional look into my practice, as well as at a commonplace life-form, will hopefully guide both viewers and myself to likewise unconventional new strategies for looking at Global Capitalism, and to make at least a small first step towards new ways of working within and against it.
