Corporate Entity was a work which used clippings from corporately owned plants as the focus of a discussion on post and peri-Capitalist reclamation. It was initially inspired by the knowledge that a clipping, taken from a living plant and grown elsewhere, is not only genetically identical to the organism it came from, but is technically the same plant, neither part of it having ever ceased functioning. I was interested by the way that this multi-bodied growth mirrored the structure of corporations and other similar organizations, and how clipping could be equated to hacking.
As the work and my research developed, they drifted further and further away from this initial concept and towards the above mentioned themes of reclamation, until several of their elements, including the piece’s title, felt at odds with the work I was actually doing. Combined with my black thumb, and being forced into hiatus by the winter, the work just sort of petered out.
As will also soon become apparent, neither my web design nor my writing skills were as developed as they are now, (which is saying something) and being faced with the task of redesigning the site from the ground up helped tip my decision to discontinue the work.
While I’ve played with the idea of exploring it further, I would begin a new work, more in line with where this one ended up, rather than continue this piece itself.
